The Great Pavillon Paradox-
You Needed Us,
Now, WE NEED YOU!
Volunteer to be on the Alumni Advisory Committee
Alumni Services will be establishing a committee of up to 8 alumni whose sole purpose will be to help us improve the roster of activities we provide our alums. You will be responsible for:
Assisting with the planning of meaningful alumni activities and events
Helping us organize our social media network
Serving as a representative of your fellow alums wants and needs
Once a month, we will meet via conference call with a quarterly meeting on campus at Alumni House. Those who wish to stay overnight after the quarterly Saturday meeting are welcome to do so.
Participation requirements are:
One year of sobriety post discharge from Pavillon
Adherence to Pavillon recommended aftercare plan
Must be actively working a 12 step program
As a volunteer, you will find that serving out of one's choice and expecting nothing in return brings experiences of freedom and fulfillment heretofore unimagined.
What's the "payoff"? ---camaraderie, connection, service and self-esteem.
Won't you join us in serving the heart of Pavillon? Give me a call if you are interested.
Alumni Services Welcomes Cecile Callis
Pavillon is happy to welcome Cecil Callis as Assistant Alumni Services Manager. Cecile has been an ardent supporter of alumni activities as an alumni family member for over three years.
Cecile comes to us with eight years of continuous sobriety. She started her journey at First Step Farm in Candler, NC. Cecile has been active in the 12 step community ever since. Her service work includes taking meetings to Craggy Correctional Center, serving as GSR for the in house meeting at First Step Farm and sharing her experience, strength and hope as a regular speaker at AA meetings. Cecile also served on the Board of Directors for Next Step Recovery in Asheville, NC for three years.
Cecile will focus on strengthening the alumni contact base and will participate in regional support group meetings. She will also be responsible for launching "Facebook" for Pavillon alumni. Look for our fb page soon!
Announcing An Exciting Addition to Our Dining Services Team - Chef Bryan Kilby
A recent decision to close The Water Oak Restaurant in Rutherfordton has presented us with a unique opportunity to expand our dining services management and bring on board its owner and chef, Bryan Kilby. After many highly successful years running his fine dining establishment, Bryan brings a wealth of talent and expertise to Pavillon as he enjoys sharing his passion for the culinary arts with others.
Bryan received his formal training at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in the rigorous and well-regarded Culinary Program. It was during this time that Bryan honed his skills as a chef winning first place in the State Jr. Hot Food Competition and a gold medal in the Southeast Regional Jr. Hot Food Competition.
Bryan's focus is southern cuisine while using many classic Mediterranean preparation techniques. He believes in using only the freshest ingredients of the highest quality and that everything should be made from scratch. His ideas include bringing a new, more comfortable atmosphere to the dining room.
Bryan is married with two children.

A New Role For Audrey
We are excited to report that Audrey Kendrick will be educating patients on healthy eating in recovery. Her new duties also include cooking classes for Pavillon Place residents and primary care patients. She will develop recovery recipes and menus for patients to use upon discharge.
Audrey's plans also include transforming our existing alumni garden into a bountiful vegetable and herb garden - growing cilantro, parsley, dill, chamomile, chives, basil, tomatoes, squash, peas and cucumbers. The new and improved garden will also provide service work for Pavillon Place residents and be part of the therapeutic duty roster for our primary care patients.
Sweet Potato Power - Nutritious Eating from Audrey!
Not all potatoes are created equal. The sweet potato is very good for you - it's a complex carbohydrate loaded with Vitamin A, C and E. It also has other vitamins as well such as thiamin, niacin and riboflavin B6 and folate. It has very little fat and contains omega 3 and omega 6. Although nutritionists agree that a baked sweet potato runs high on the glycolic index, if boiled the sweet potato has a good rating. Just skip the sugar and marshmallows!
So the next time you are looking for a starch to pair with a piece of fish, or chicken, a juicy steak or just by itself, think of the sweet potato. This wonderful food should be a staple in everyone's diet.
Meet Catherine Prather-Lowen, MSW, LCSW, ACHT
Catherine has been the lead women's counselor at Pavillon for 15 months. Prior to joining Pavillon, Catherine spent 2 years at ARP Phoenix in Asheville as a substance abuse counselor and three years in private practice as a Hypnotherapist with specialties in trauma and co-occurring disorders. She also has 7 years to her credit with Buncombe County DSS as the program manager for Adoptions, Foster Care and Licensing. Catherine has a tremendous amount of experience working with addicted families. In her work with DSS, 78% of the time children were removed from the home because of substance abuse problems.
Catherine encourages everyone in the women's community to "go to any length" to get involved post discharge. Staying connected through the myriad of activities and events offered by alumni services is a life line! Failing to do so can result in returning to self-defeating behavior.
What does she enjoy the most about her job at Pavillon? The people she works with!
